Okunoshima: October 2nd, 2013, 2013, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan - Okunoshima is a small island located in the Inland Sea of Japan in the city of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is accessible via ferry boat from the towns of Tadanoumi and Omishima. It is often called Usagi Jima ( Rabbit Island in Japanese) because of the great number of wild rabbits roaming the island, which are friendly and usually approach humans. Okunoshima played a key role during World War II as a poison gas factory, because of its isolation, and because it was far enough from Tokyo and other areas in case of disaster. Residents and employees were not told what the plant was manufacturing and everything was kept secret; many of them, working in very harsh conditions, suffered from toxic-exposure related illnesses afterwards.
