  • January 31, 2019 - Antarctica - gigantic cavity, two-thirds the area of Manhattan and almost 1,000 feet tall, growing at the bottom of Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica is one of several disturbing discoveries reported in a new -led study of the disintegrating glacier. The findings highlight the need for detailed observations of Antarctic glaciers undersides in calculating how fast global sea levels will rise in response to climate change. • THIS IMAGE SHOWS: The US Antarctic Program research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer working along the ice edge of the Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf in February 2019. FEATURE STORY: The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica which is about the size of Florida and a key indicator for scientists trying to make global sea level rise predictions - is retreating alarmingly, scientists have found. This massive ice stream is already in a phase of fast retreat (a collapse when viewed on geological timescales) leading to widespread concern about exactly how much, or how fast, it may give up its ice to the ocean. The potential impact of Thwaites? retreat is spine-chilling: a total loss of the glacier and surrounding icy basins could raise sea levels Copyright: xx 51945645 EDITORIAL USE ONLY.
