In 1941 a Vietnamese socialist activist HO CHI MINH founds Viet Minh - a national liberation movement which conquers Hanoi in what became known as the August Revolution. HO CHI MINH declares Vietnam to be independent, naming the country the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) but fails to be recognized by French authorities and the U.S. president Harry S Truman. French forces entered Vietnam and fighting quickly broke out between French and Viet Minh forces. By 1949, when the French reinstalled Bao Dai as figurehead, the two sides had fought to a standstill.   • Heavy fighting for French stronghold in Indochina The initial Viet Minh onslaught to split the isolated French stronghold, Dien Bien Phu, failed, but bitter fighting is still reported in Indo China. The French have incurred heavy losses on the rebel forces. France s most urgent need there at the moment is aircraft reinforements. Since the violent flare-up the garrison has been receiving replacements, men and material by parachute. Photo shows: Sorely needed reinforcements arrive. The paratroops were denied the use of two air strips at Dien Bien Phu which were put out of action early in the assault.
