Vasa oder Wasa ist ein schwedisches Kriegsschiff, das zwischen 1626 und 1628 gebaut wurde. Das Schiff sank, nachdem es am 10. August 1628 auf seiner Jungfernfahrt etwa 1 300 m weit gefahren war. Es wurde in den späten 1950er Jahren von Anders Franzen in einem belebten Schifffahrtsbereich des Stockholmer Hafens wiedergefunden. Das Schiff wurde 1961 mit einem weitgehend intakten Rumpf geborgen. Auf dem Foto vom Montag, dem 24. April 1961, drängten sich die Öffentlichkeit und die Medien aus aller Welt um Kastellholmen. Es war Zeit für den endgültigen Aufzug, bei dem die Vasa nach 333 Jahren in kompakter Dunkelheit auf dem Meeresgrund endlich das Licht der Welt erblicken würde. Apr. 17, 2012 - Vasa Sails Again. 17th Century Warship Raised From The Weep: On a fine afternoon in August, 1628, the proud ship Vasa - named for the Swedish Royal Family - set sail from Stockholm on her maiden voyage. She was the pride of the fleet of Gustav 11 Adolf, a welcome new warship to a Sweden engaged in tee Thirty Years . Less than a nautical mile from the quay where thousands of spectators watched, off the island of Beckholm, a sudden squall healed the ship over, water gushed through the open gun-ports, and with all her flags flying, Vasa sank to the bottom of the ocean, under 110 feet of water. She was never recovered although several attempts were made. Then one day in 1956 a Swedish Admiralty engineer by the name of Andere Franzen who was interested in the recovery of old sunken ships, brought up from the bottom, a plug of blackened oak. Diagram at left shows one final lifting of the 17th century Vasa . Heavy nine-inch wires are drawn under the old oak hull deep into the mud covering the bottom of the Stockholm waterfront. Centre - the two pontoons are drained and the ship rises three metres . New wires are put under the hull and it is again lowered to the bottom. Right - during the lifting of the Vasa whe will be towed gradually into less deep water . All the time , divers are working to repair all small leakages.
