  • RECORD DATE NOT STATED Akira Mutō or Mutō Akira was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II Akira Mutō or Mutō Akira, (15 December 1892 23 December 1948) was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. He was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to death by hanging. Promoted to lieutenant general just prior to the start of the Pacific War, Mutō served as director of the Military Affairs Bureau at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was assigned command of the Second Imperial Guards Division at Singapore in April 1942. After the surrender of Japan, Mutō was arrested by the American occupation authorities and charged with war crimes before the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. Hideki Tojo (30 December 1884 23 December 1948) was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) and the 40th Prime Minister of Japan during much of World War II, from 18 October 1941 to 22 July 1944. Some historians hold him responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to America entering World War II.   • Ex-Imperial Japanese Army officer Sejima at Tokyo tribunal Ryuzo Sejima, a former Imperial Japanese Army officer who played a key role in the planning of many operations during the Pacific War and became a prisoner of war in Siberia after he served as a staff officer at the Manchuria-based Kwantung Army, testifies at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo on Oct. 18, 1946, after being flown from Vladivostok to appear at a hearing. Following his return to Japan after 11 years of hard labor in Siberia, Sejima went into business and later advised Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone on the privatization of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corp. and Japanese National Railways in the 1980s.
