  • November 1, 2023, Space: This image released today shows the moonrise of the satellite as it emerges from behind asteroid Dinkinesh as seen by the Lucy Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (L LORRI), one of the most detailed images returned by NASA s Lucy spacecraft during its flyby of the asteroid binary. Image was taken at 12:55 p.m. EDT Nov. 1, 2023, within a minute of closest approach, from a range of approximately 270 miles. From this perspective, the satellite is behind the primary asteroid. The image has been sharpened and processed to enhance contrast. Space - ZUMAz03_ 20231104_shn_z03_338 Copyright: xNASA Goddardx
  • Asteroid Phaethon s Comet-Like Tail Not Made Of Dust But Gas Handout photo - This illustration depicts asteroid Phaethon being heated by the Sun. The asteroid?s surface gets so hot that sodium inside Phaethon?s rock likely vaporizes and vents into space, causing it to brighten like a comet and form a tail. We have known for a while that asteroid 3200 Phaethon acts like a comet. It brightens and forms a tail when it?s near the Sun, and it is the source of the annual Geminid meteor shower, even though comets are responsible for most meteor showers. Scientists had blamed Phaethon?s comet-like behavior on dust escaping from the asteroid as it?s scorched by the Sun. However, a new study using two NASA solar observatories reveals that P Copyright: xABACAx 850759_001 ABACAx 850759_001

  • On March 21, 2021, the large asteroid 2001 FO32 made a close approach with our planet, passing at a distance of about 1.25 million miles (2 million kilometers) or 5 1 4 times the distance from Earth to the Moon. While there was no risk of the near-Earth asteroid colliding with Earth as its orbit is very well known, scientists at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California took the opportunity to capture these radar images of the asteroid as it tumbled past. Using NASA s 34-meter (111.5-feet) Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio antenna at the Deep Space Network s Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex near Barstow, California, radio signals were transmitted to 2001 FO32. The signals then bounced off the surface of the as Copyright: xpiemagsx piemagsspace-171807 !ACHTUNG AUFNAHMEDATUM GESCHÄTZT!
  • A Metal-Rich World (Artist s Concept) This artist s concept depicts the 140-mile-wide (226-kilometer-wide) asteroid Psyche, which lies in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Psyche is the focal point of NASA s mission of the same name. The Psyche spacecraft is set to launch in August 2022 and arrive at the asteroid in 2026, where it will orbit for 21 months and investigate its composition. Scientists think that Psyche, unlike most other asteroids that are rocky or icy bodies, is made up of mostly iron and nickel similar to the Earth s core. Exploring the asteroid could give valuable insight into how our own planet and others formed. The Psyche team will use a magnetometer to measure the asteroid s magnetic field. A multis

  • Kennedy Space Center SOL SYSTEM - 03 Dec 2018 - NASAis Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft completed its 1.2 billion-mile (2 billion-kilometer) journey to arrive at the asteroid Bennu late Monday 03 Dec 2018. The spacecraft executed a maneuver that transitioned it from flying toward Bennu to operating around the asteroid. Now, at about 11.8 miles (19 kilometers) from Bennuis Sun-facing surface, OSIRIS-REx will begin a preliminary survey of the asteroid. The spacecraft will commence flyovers of Bennuis north pole, equatorial region, and south pole, getting as close as nearly 4 miles (7 kilometers) above Bennu during each flyover Goddard University of Arizona, United EP_atl
