Pope Leo XIV paid a private visit to the Abbey of Montecassino and its monastic community and prayed for peace at the tomb of St. Benedict. The Abbey of Montecassino is a Benedictine monastery on a rocky hill about 130 kilometres southeast of Rome. It was the first monastery of the Benedictine order, founded by the saint himself in 529. In 1944, during World War II, it was the site of the Battle of Monte Cassino, when the building was destroyed by Allied bombing. It was rebuilt after the war.
