Elaborate altars are displayed on streets ahead of the Day of the Dead on October 30, 2026 in Mexico City, Mexico. Mexicans believe that the spirits of deceased relatives return to reunite with their families during the season, and the altars serve as waypoints for their journey. The altars, adorned with marigolds, food, and photographs, symbolize a brief reunion between the living and the dead and accept the cycle of life and death. In addition to private family offerings, large altars in cities and museums commemorate groups and historical figures, while businesses decorate with Day of the Dead themes.
